EALTH FOUNDATION (AMHF)

• The AMHF was conceptualized in 2000 by Prof. David M. Ndetei, Professor of Psychiatry, and University of Nairobi, Kenya with the following motto which summarizes its mission:

“Dedicated to Research for evidence-based Policy, Practice in and Promotion of Mental and Neurological Health and Healthy Behavior”

• AMHF was registered on 18th March 2004 as an International Non-Governmental Organization (NGO, REG NO: 218/051/2003/0417/2976) to operate anywhere inside and outside Kenya. Since its inception, it has carried out and/or participated in the following research activities:

1. Study on the Assessment of the Linkages Between Drug Abuse, Injecting Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS in Kenya in collaboration with United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC)

2. The Nairobi Secondary Schools Survey on Drug Abuse, Emotional and Conduct Disorders

3. A study of Stress/Burnout, the related factors and their impacts on Job related performance

4. A Study of Patients Admitted at Mathari Hospital and the perceived impact of mental illness on the family

5. Mathari Hospital Study on Burden of Disease on Relatives

6. Busia Project – Developing Cognitive tools to understand HIV/AIDS prevention mechanism among primary school children in collaboration with Imperial College, University of London

7. Bondo Project – Does Treating Malaria Improve a Child’s Concentration? in collaboration with Imperial College, University of London

8. Mental Health in Refugee Children

9. Mental Health Aspects in Traditional Treatment in Kenya

10. A Survey of Mental Health Training and migration in Africa

11. A Survey of Mental Health Resources in Kenya in collaboration with World Health Organisation (WHO).

12. The Psychosocial Aspects of the Kyanguli School Fire Tragedy

13. Psychological effects of the Nairobi US Embassy Bomb Blast on Pregnant Women and their Children in collaboration with Africa Medical Research Foundation (AMREF) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
