Africa Health ExCon 2025 (Health ExCon 2025) marks a defining moment for the continent’s public health journey. Held under the auspices of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and with the esteemed presence of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, this year’s gathering reaffirms Africa’s commitment to health sovereignty.

Africa CDC is a proud co-host of the Health ExCon 2025, alongside our diligent colleagues of the Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement (UPA) and in collaboration with AUDA_NEPAD, this year’s edition places local manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and knowledge sharing at the center of the conversation. We have high ambitions that ExCon 2025 will build on the success of past editions to elevate the role of innovation, local manufacturing, and AI-driven public health across the continent.

Africa Health ExCon 2025 is more than a global health exhibition; it’s a continental launchpad for Africa’s health future, it’s in fact a movement. As Africa’s premier platform for health innovation, investment, and collaboration, ExCon 2025 brings together governments, private sector leaders, frontline workers, and youth innovators.

Join us as we shape a new order for public health, one where Africa’s health future is not imported, but imagined, built, and led from within. At the heart of it all is a clear message:
Africa’s health future will not be imported. It will be imagined, built, and led from within.

    About the DSMB Training

The training aims to expand the pool of qualified data safety monitoring board (DSMB) members by upscaling the availability of trained experts in safety monitoring. The program works to support the ethical oversight of vaccine clinical trials in Africa and improve global preparedness for emerging health threats. The program is an 8-week training that includes self-paced learning and live virtual sessions facilitated by leading experts in vaccine safety and clinical trial monitoring. Upon successful completion, participants can then join the DSMB global pool, where they may be considered for future clinical trial oversight roles.

Safety monitoring in clinical trials is crucial to ensure ethical research practices and protecting participant’s well-being. Adverse events can arise during the administration of investigational products, requiring rigorous oversight to assess risks and ensure timely interventions. DSMB plays a vital role in reviewing clinical trial data, safeguarding trial participants, and maintaining the integrity of study results. To strengthen DSMB expertise continentally, Africa CDC, in collaboration with the Safety Platform for Emergency Vaccines (SPEAC), will offer a structured DSMB training course that will robustly build the capacity of training participants to undertake the very crucial role of monitoring clinical trials for vaccines and other new treatment platforms in Africa and elsewhere to confront emerging and reemerging public health threats.

    What the Training Covers

The eight-week-long intensive training course will employ a modular format, combining recorded lectures with live virtual sessions, an approach that ensures flexibility while maintaining interactive learning environment. Expert trainers and subject matter specialists drawn from across the world will facilitate sessions, leveraging their real-world experience to provide high-quality instruction.

    • Vaccine Clinical Trials & Safety Monitoring
    • DSMB Roles & Decision-Making
    • Regulatory & Ethical Considerations
    • Safety Monitoring & Risk Assessment
    • Statistical Methods for DSMB
    • DSMB Meetings & Case Discussions
    • Practical Applications, quizzes and final assessment
    • Stronger Regulatory and Ethical Compliance.

Objective: To enable graduates to acquire to the industrial technical skills for the Vaccine Manufacturing Industry.

Scaling vaccine manufacturing and R&D across the continent to meet PAVM’s 2040 ambitions will require quadrupling the vaccine workforce to approximately 12,500 full-time employees (FTEs). Currently, there is a scarcity of vaccine development and manufacturing talent in Africa. Today, this talent totals between 2,000 and 3,000 FTEs, of whom many are associated with R&D entities that are not fully vaccine dedicated. Within this existing talent base, there is a lack of key manufacturing capabilities including drug substance and manufacturing R&D.

How to Apply: To apply, please complete the form at the link: rb.gy/20uhj6

    Eligibility:
The industrial fellowship programme is targeted at recent (not more than 3 years) graduates (Bachelors and Masters) of the following and/or related fields:

    • Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
    • Biotechnology

    Application Deadline: 30th May 2025

    Background
The African Union/African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention have called for a New Public Health Order which will safeguard the health and economic security of the continent as it strives to meet the aspirations of Agenda 2063.

A key pillar of this mandate seeks to expand the local manufacture of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics. Less than one percent of vaccines administered on the continent are manufactured locally. This places a great burden on the health systems of African countries and reduces their ability to respond to pandemics and other health crises.

The Partnerships for African Vaccine Manufacturing (PAVM) was established by the African Union (AU) in 2021 to deliver a bold goal: enabling the African vaccine manufacturing industry to develop, produce, and supply over 60 percent of the total vaccine doses required on the continent by 2040, up from less than 1 percent today (with interim goals of 10 percent by 2025 and 30 percent by 2030). Since 2024, the PAVM has been upgraded to the Platform for Harmonized African Health products Manufacturing
(PHAHM) to extend its mandate to strengthening the manufacturing of therapeutics, diagnostics, and other health countermeasures.
