Africa CDC is dispatching emergency medical supplies to Sudan following the 28 October attack on the Saudi Maternity Hospital in El Fasher, North Darfur, which killed hundreds, led to the abduction of health workers and crippled one of the region’s few remaining hospitals.

Working with the African Union Humanitarian Affairs Division, Africa CDC has also deployed experts to support outbreak control, sustain essential care, and reinforce biosafety in the affected area. The agency is coordinating with Sudan’s Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization to assess the health impact.

Africa CDC urged all parties to protect health facilities, staff and laboratories to prevent further biosecurity risks. With Sudan already battling multiple outbreaks, continued attacks on health infrastructure are deepening the crisis.

UK Approves Direct Funding to Africa CDC

The United Kingdom has officially approved direct funding to Africa CDC, marking a major vote of confidence in the agency’s governance and financial systems.

This milestone follows nearly a year of rigorous due diligence and reflects Africa CDC’s institutional reforms since 2023 -including alignment with African Union financial regulations, strengthened internal oversight, and the adoption of robust ESG and anti-fraud policies.

The UK joins a growing list of global partners -including the World Bank, Gavi, CEPI and the EU -that now entrust the Africa CDC with direct financial management of major health programmes.

Director-General Dr Jean Kaseya welcomed the UK’s decision as a powerful affirmation of Africa CDC’s transformation and called on other partners to follow suit, highlighting the agency’s commitment to African leadership and global accountability.

Historic First as Ethiopia Rolls Out R21 Malaria Vaccine

Ethiopia has made history, becoming the first country to launch the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, delivered alongside insecticide-treated nets to protect children in 58 high-burden districts.

With 186,000 doses ready for rollout, this integrated approach provides double protection against one of Africa’s deadliest diseases.
Africa CDC congratulates Ethiopia for its leadership and partnership – bringing us one step closer to a continent free of malaria.

The R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, developed by the University of Oxford in partnership with the Serum Institute of India and Novavax, demonstrated up to 77% efficacy in clinical trials published in 2021 and was endorsed by the World Health Organization in 2023 for use in children under three – marking a major advancement in global malaria prevention efforts.

Africa CDC Responds to New Ebola Outbreak in DRC

Africa CDC has launched an emergency response to the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) 16th Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak, confirmed in Kasai Province. Director General Dr Jean Kaseya visited the country to coordinate with the Ministry of Health, and experts have been deployed to support surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory capacity and infection control.

The outbreak began with a 34-year-old pregnant woman and has resulted in 15 deaths and 28 suspected cases across Bulape and Mweka health zones, including four healthcare workers. The Zaire strain has been confirmed, and investigations are ongoing to determine the source. Kasai last reported an Ebola outbreak in 2008.

Africa CDC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the DRC through enhanced digital surveillance, protection of frontline health workers, and targeted vaccination. It emphasised early detection, effective case management and close coordination with national and international partners to contain the outbreak.

Continental Cholera Response Plan Unveiled in Lusaka

The fight against cholera in Africa has entered a new phase with the launch of a six-month continental response plan. Announced on August 26 in Lusaka, Zambia, the initiative is led by Africa CDC and WHO, and championed by African Union Cholera Champion H.E. President Hakainde Hichilema. It aims to eliminate cholera by 2030 through urgent action, coordinated leadership and increased investment.

President Hichilema has played a central role in mobilising political commitment across the continent. His call in June 2025 to African Heads of State led to pledges for stronger investment, cross-border coordination and expanded vaccine access — laying the groundwork for the newly launched plan.

The strategy focuses on seven priorities areas will be implemented through the Continental Cholera Incident Management Support Team (IMST), integrated with the Mpox IMST, and co-led by Africa CDC and WHO to ensure rapid, unified responses supported by technical and logistical expertise.

Africa CDC Director General Dr Jean Kaseya said the plan is designed to save lives by reducing cholera-related deaths and strengthening preparedness and coordination across the continent. He underscored the importance of strong political leadership, technical expertise and continental solidarity in moving closer to a cholera-free Africa.

To accelerate progress, Africa CDC and WHO will also support the creation of the African Continental Task Force on Cholera Control. This body will align Member States and partners with global elimination targets, establish National Presidential Task Forces, and mobilise resources — including vaccines. With cases and deaths projected to surge in the coming months, coordinated action is more urgent than ever.

Mpox at One Year: Lessons in Speed and Continental Coordination

One year ago, on 13 August 2024, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security — its first such declaration — in response to a rapidly worsening situation across multiple regions. This decision mobilised political and technical resources continent-wide, strengthening coordination and driving a unified response.

The mpox response has become a model for how the continent can confront public health threats with speed, solidarity, and resilience. By rapidly mobilising vaccines, strengthening surveillance, and deploying expert teams to affected areas, Africa CDC has demonstrated the value of coordinated continental action.

Central to this effort was the establishment of an Incident Management Support Team (IMST) – coled by Africa CDC and WHO – which coordinated technical guidance, country support and realtime information sharing.

The mpox outbreak has also underscored the importance of investing in local manufacturing of medical countermeasures, reinforcing community health systems, and expanding cross-border collaboration to prevent future outbreaks.
