{"id":10585,"date":"2021-11-25T18:33:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-25T15:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/?post_type=speech&#038;p=10585"},"modified":"2021-11-30T18:46:54","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T15:46:54","slug":"talking-points-weekly-press-briefing-on-covid-19-in-africa-25-november-2021","status":"publish","type":"speech","link":"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/speech\/talking-points-weekly-press-briefing-on-covid-19-in-africa-25-november-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Talking Points, Weekly Press Briefing on COVID-19 in Africa, 25 November 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Welcome Remarks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Good morning from the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, and thank you to members of the press for joining today\u2019s briefing.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>At this time, I will share updates on the COVID-19 situation on the continent, including our response efforts and updates on the vaccine situation.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update | OVERVIEW<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>As of today, November 25th, African Union Member States are reporting the following:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total cases :<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 8.6 million <\/strong>COVID-19 cases have been reported in Africa, (8,614,525). This accounts for <strong>3.3%<\/strong> of total cases reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total recoveries:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 8 million <\/strong>people have recovered (8,060,459). This accounts for <strong>94%<\/strong> of the total cases reported in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total deaths:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 222,000 deaths <\/strong>have been reported (222,254). This results ina cumulative <strong>case fatality rate<\/strong> (CFR) of 2.6%,and accounts for <strong>4.3%<\/strong> of deaths reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following five countries account for <strong><u>61%<\/u><\/strong> of all cases reported in Africa.<ul><li>South Africa: <strong>34%<\/strong> of total cases (2,950,035)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Morocco: <strong>11%<\/strong> of total cases (949,263)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Tunisia: <strong>8%<\/strong> of total cases (716,702)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ethiopia: <strong>4%<\/strong> of total cases (370,712)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Libya: <strong>4%<\/strong> of total cases (369,455)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Case Fatality Rate (CFR):<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>this week, <strong>27 <\/strong>countries (<strong>49%<\/strong> of Member States), are reporting a CFR higher than the global average of 2%.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>3 <\/strong>countries<strong> (Egypt, Somalia <\/strong>and<strong> Sudan) <\/strong>are reporting a<strong> CFR higher than 5%.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>84% <\/strong>of Member States(<strong>46 <\/strong>countries) experienced the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> COVID-19 wave. <strong>34 (74%) MS are experiencing a more severe 3<sup>rd<\/sup> wave.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Since the last briefing,<strong> NO <\/strong>additional Member State is experiencing a 3<sup>rd<\/sup> wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Eleven <\/strong>countries <strong>(Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Eritrea, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Somalia <\/strong>and<strong> Tunisia) <\/strong>are experiencing a 4<sup>th<\/sup> COVID-19 wave. <strong>4 (36%) MS are experiencing a more severe 4<sup>th<\/sup> wave.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Since the last briefing, <strong>two <\/strong>additional Member States (<strong>Eritrea <\/strong>and<strong> Mauritania<\/strong>) are experiencing a 4<sup>th<\/sup> wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>One <\/strong>country <strong>(Mauritius) <\/strong>is experiencing a 5<sup>th<\/sup> COVID-19 wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> VARIANTS OF CONCERN (VOC)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>45<\/strong> countries are now reporting the <strong>Alpha<\/strong> (<strong>B.1.1.7<\/strong>) VOC.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the last briefing, <strong>NO <\/strong>additional Member State is reporting this variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>41<\/strong> countries are now reporting the <strong>Beta<\/strong> (<strong>B.1.351<\/strong>) VOC.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Since the last briefing, <strong>NO <\/strong>additional Member State is reporting this variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>43 <\/strong>countries are now reporting the <strong>Delta<\/strong> (<strong>B.1.617.2<\/strong>) VOC.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the last briefing, <strong>ONE (Comoros) <\/strong>additional Member State is reporting this variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>2<\/strong> Member States are reporting the <strong>Gamma (GR\/501Y.V3\/P.1+P.1.1+P.1.2)<\/strong> VOC.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the last briefing, <strong>NO<\/strong> additional Member State has reported this variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More details are provided in our dashboard:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-africa-cdc wp-block-embed-africa-cdc\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"unn5QdoiRY\"><a href=\"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/institutes\/ipg\/\">Institute of Pathogen Genomics (IPG)<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Institute of Pathogen Genomics (IPG)&#8221; &#8212; Africa CDC\" src=\"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/institutes\/ipg\/embed\/#?secret=doUI9ZwOqC#?secret=unn5QdoiRY\" data-secret=\"unn5QdoiRY\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> ONE-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following are trends for epidemiological week <strong>46 <\/strong>(<strong>15 &#8211; 21 November 2021<\/strong>), compared to the previous epidemiological week 45 (8 &#8211; 14 November 2021):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New cases:<\/u><\/strong> A total of<strong> 24,474 new cases<\/strong> were reported in Africa. This is a <strong>11% decrease <\/strong>from the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>highest proportion <\/strong>of new cases is from the <strong>Northern region<\/strong> (<strong>51%<\/strong>). The other regions are as follows:<\/li><li>Southern region (21%)<\/li><li>Eastern region (19%)<\/li><li>Western region (5%)<\/li><li>Central region (4%)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following 5 countries are reporting the <strong><u>highest number<\/u><\/strong> of new cases:<\/li><li><strong>Egypt (6,436)<\/strong><\/li><li>South Africa (3,923)<\/li><li>Libya (3,155)<\/li><li>Ethiopia (1,378)<\/li><li>Sudan (1,125)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following 5 countries are reporting the <strong>highest daily incidence per million<\/strong> <strong>population<\/strong>, (<em>average number of new cases per million population per day<\/em>):<\/li><li>Comoros (82)<\/li><li>Mauritius (59)<\/li><li>Eswatini (27)<\/li><li>Cabo Verde (26)<\/li><li>Gabon (25)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New deaths:<\/u> <\/strong>A total of <strong>973 new deaths<\/strong> were reported in Africa compared to <strong>1,148 <\/strong>from the previous week. This represents a <strong>15% decrease <\/strong>in new deaths from the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> FOUR-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following are trends over the past 4 epidemiological weeks, (<strong>25 October &#8211; 21 November 2021<\/strong>):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New cases<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>6% average decrease <\/strong>in new cases reported in Africa each week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a <strong>regional<\/strong> breakdown:<ul><li><strong>8% increase <\/strong>in the<strong> Southern <\/strong>region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>8% decrease in the Easternregion<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>7%decreasein the Westernregion<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>2% decrease in the Northern region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>2% decrease in the Central region<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a breakdown by the <strong>most populous countries<\/strong> in Africa:<ul><li><strong>DR Congo: 21% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>South Africa: 15% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Egypt: 1% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ethiopia: 18% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Kenya: 16% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Nigeria: 15% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New deaths<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>8% average decrease <\/strong>in new deaths reported in Africa each week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a breakdown by the <strong>most populous countries<\/strong> in Africa:<ul><li><strong>Kenya: 102% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>DRC: 100% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Nigeria<\/strong>: <strong>83% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Egypt<\/strong>: <strong>9% average<\/strong> <strong>increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>South Africa: 25% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ethiopia: 19% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 TESTING &amp; MEDICAL SUPPLIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To date, <strong>over 81 million<\/strong> COVID-19 tests (81,579,1304) have been conducted in African Union Member States since the pandemic started.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Over <strong>798,000 new tests<\/strong> (798,228) were reported for epidemiological <strong>week 46 <\/strong>(15 &#8211; 21 November 2021).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This is a <strong>15% decrease <\/strong>from the previous week when 941,758 tests were reported.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The cumulative positivity rate is <strong>10.6%<\/strong> and the test-per-case ratio is<strong> 9.5, <\/strong>similar to a positivity rate of 10.7% and test-per-case ratio of 9.3 in the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Uganda <\/strong>&nbsp;is the only MS that is reporting a test positivity rate higher than 12% this week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CAPACITY-BUILDING FOR MEMBER STATES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In-country IPC Step-down Training for all the districts in Uganda is ongoing (24th &#8211; 26th November 2021).<\/li><li>2nd session of the IPC webinar 10th series held last week on <strong>\u201cWaste Management during the COVID-19 pandemic\u201d<\/strong>, <strong>967 participants<\/strong> were trained on English sessions with Arabic and Portuguese interpretation. A French session takes place today.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ANNOUNCEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On the 06<sup>th<\/sup> &amp; 07<sup>th<\/sup> December 2021, t<\/strong><strong>he Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC)<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong>African Medicines Agency (AMA)<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>African Union Development Agency NEPAD (AUDA NEPAD), and Continental Free Trade Area&nbsp;(CFTA)<\/strong><strong> will be convening a high-level stakeholder\u2019s engagement meeting to discuss the Progress made so far on implementing the Partnerships for Vaccine Manufacturing in Africa (PAVM).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"631\" src=\"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/PAVM-Conference-1024x631.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/PAVM-Conference-1024x631.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/africacdc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/PAVM-Conference-300x185.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/africacdc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/PAVM-Conference-768x473.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/africacdc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/PAVM-Conference.jpeg 1408w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The 39<sup>th<\/sup> Ordinary Session of the African Union\u2019s Executive Council decision EX.CL\/Dec. 1129 (XXXIX) recognized PAVM as the coordinating mechanism and its leadership of the development of a continental vaccine manufacturing strategy and a framework for action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The four core mandates of the PAVM are to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"a\"><li>Steward a continental strategy that maintains scale and cost-competitiveness of local manufacturing and promotes equity and security for all<\/li><li>Support partnerships to create a conducive business environment that will encourage the emergence of a thriving manufacturing base<\/li><li>Play intermediation and partner role between Member States and the global community of supporters on an as-needed basis<\/li><li>Communicate updates and serve as the central source of information for Africa vaccine manufacturing<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The PAVM is now an effective entity that has started to articulate a detailed strategy (\u201c<strong>Framework for Action<\/strong>\u201d) for the years to come and, at the same time, deliver on these core mandates. It thus is and will continue to be at the Centre of the efforts to develop localized vaccine manufacturing in Africa, supporting all stakeholders \u2013 AU Member States, financiers, and manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OBJECTIVES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"I\"><li>Update on progress made so far on the Partnerships for African Vaccine Manufacturing in Africa<\/li><li>Agree on an AU-endorsed approach to facilitate regulatory approval of vaccines produced in Africa<\/li><li>Discuss critical market shaping needs once African countries produce vaccines<\/li><li>Build on the momentum of vaccine manufacture hubs and pilot a drug API-final drug product Hub program<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From the 14<sup>th<\/sup> to the 16<sup>th<\/sup> December 2021, t<\/strong><strong>he Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the African Union will be hosting <\/strong><strong>the inaugural Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA 2021) virtually.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CPHIA 2021 comes at a critical time on the continent and in the world. COVID-19 has strained health systems globally, and with limited access to vaccines in Africa, the pandemic has laid bare deep inequities in access to healthcare and scientific innovations. CPHIA will create a unique platform where African researchers, policymakers and stakeholders can share perspectives and research findings in public health, while ushering in a new era of strengthened scientific collaboration and innovation across the continent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1001\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/CPHIA2021.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/CPHIA2021.png 1001w, https:\/\/africacdc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/CPHIA2021-300x128.png 300w, https:\/\/africacdc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/CPHIA2021-768x328.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1001px) 100vw, 1001px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of heads of state and leading scientific experts are already confirmed for the event, which will focus on lessons learned from COVID-19 and how the continent charts a new path forward for public health. Also, 12, 000 doses were delivered to the African Union.
