{"id":10697,"date":"2021-12-09T17:46:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-09T14:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/?post_type=speech&#038;p=10697"},"modified":"2021-12-13T00:05:29","modified_gmt":"2021-12-12T21:05:29","slug":"talking-points-weekly-press-briefing-on-covid-19-in-africa-09-december-2021","status":"publish","type":"speech","link":"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/speech\/talking-points-weekly-press-briefing-on-covid-19-in-africa-09-december-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Talking Points, Weekly Press Briefing on COVID-19 in Africa, 09 December 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Welcome Remarks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Good morning from the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, and thank you to members of the press for joining today\u2019s briefing.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>At this time, I will share updates on the COVID-19 situation on the continent, including our response efforts and updates on the vaccine situation.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a0COVID-19 Epidemiology Update | OVERVIEW<\/strong><gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>As of today, December 9<sup>th<\/sup> 2021, African Union Member States are reporting the following:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total cases:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 8.7 million <\/strong>COVID-19 cases have been reported in Africa, (8,797,227). This accounts for <strong>3.3%<\/strong> of total cases reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total recoveries:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 8.1 million <\/strong>people have recovered (8,152,116). This accounts for <strong>93%<\/strong> of the total cases reported in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total deaths:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 224,000 deaths <\/strong>have been reported (224,231). This results ina cumulative <strong>case fatality rate<\/strong> (CFR) of 2.6%,and accounts for <strong>4.3%<\/strong> of deaths reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following five countries account for <strong><u>61%<\/u><\/strong> of all cases reported in Africa.<ul><li>South Africa: <strong>34%<\/strong> of total cases (3,071,064)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Morocco: <strong>11%<\/strong> of total cases (950,946)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Tunisia: <strong>8%<\/strong> of total cases (718,696)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Libya: <strong>4%<\/strong> of total cases (376,378)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ethiopia: <strong>4%<\/strong> of total cases (372,462)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Case Fatality Rate (CFR):<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>this week, <strong>27 <\/strong>countries (<strong>49%<\/strong> of Member States), are reporting a CFR higher than the global average of 2%.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>3 <\/strong>countries<strong> (Egypt, Somalia <\/strong>and<strong> Sudan) <\/strong>are reporting a<strong> CFR higher than 5%.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>84% <\/strong>of Member States(<strong>46 <\/strong>countries) experienced the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> COVID-19 wave. <strong>34 (74%) MS are experiencing a more severe 3<sup>rd<\/sup> wave.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Since the last briefing,<strong> NO <\/strong>additional Member State is experiencing a 3<sup>rd<\/sup> wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Twelve <\/strong>countries <strong>(Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Eritrea, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Somalia. This is an <strong>88% increase <\/strong>from the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>highest proportion <\/strong>of new cases is from the <strong>Southern region<\/strong> (<strong>79%<\/strong>). The other regions are as follows:<\/li><li>Northern region (14%)<\/li><li>Eastern region (3%)<\/li><li>Western region (2%)<\/li><li>Central region (2%)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following 5 countries are reporting the <strong><u>highest number<\/u><\/strong> of new cases:<\/li><li><strong>South Africa (70,288)<\/strong><\/li><li>Egypt (6,444)<\/li><li>Zimbabwe (5,055)<\/li><li>Libya (3,259)<\/li><li>Tunisia (1,582)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following 5 countries are reporting the <strong>highest daily incidence per million<\/strong> <strong>population<\/strong>, (<em>average number of new cases per million population per day<\/em>):<\/li><li>South Africa (169)<\/li><li>Eswatini (115)<\/li><li>Mauritius (84)<\/li><li>Libya (67)<\/li><li>Zimbabwe (48)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New deaths:<\/u> <\/strong>A total of <strong>1,076 new deaths<\/strong> were reported in Africa compared to <strong>943 <\/strong>from the previous week. This represents a <strong>14% increase <\/strong>in new deaths from the previous week.<gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> FOUR-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following are trends over the past 4 epidemiological weeks, (<strong>8 November &#8211; 5 December 2021<\/strong>):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New cases<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>44% average increase <\/strong>in new cases reported in Africa each week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a <strong>regional<\/strong> breakdown:<ul><li><strong>169% increase <\/strong>in the<strong> Southern <\/strong>region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>17% <strong>increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Central<\/strong> region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>7%<strong> increase <\/strong>in the <strong>Western <\/strong>region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>2%<strong> increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Northern<\/strong> region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>11% decrease in the Eastern region<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a breakdown by the <strong>most populous countries<\/strong> in Africa:<ul><li><strong>South Africa: 233% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>DR Congo: 112% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Kenya: 2% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ethiopia: 17% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Nigeria: 5% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Egypt: 0.1% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New deaths<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>1% average decrease <\/strong>in new deaths reported in Africa each week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a breakdown by the <strong>most populous countries<\/strong> in Africa:<ul><li><strong>Nigeria: 116% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Kenya: 72% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>South Africa: 20% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Egypt: 3% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>DRC: 23% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ethiopia: 7% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 TESTING &amp; MEDICAL SUPPLIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To date, <strong>over 83 million<\/strong> COVID-19 tests (83,678,860) have been conducted in African Union Member States since the pandemic started.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Over <strong>970,000 new tests<\/strong> (974,896) were reported for epidemiological <strong>week 48 <\/strong>(29 November &#8211; 5 December 2021).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This is a <strong>14% decrease <\/strong>from the previous week when 1.135,163 tests were reported.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The cumulative positivity rate is <strong>10.5%<\/strong> and the test-per-case ratio is<strong> 9.5, <\/strong>similar to a positivity rate of 10.5% and test-per-case ratio of 9.5 in the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>11% <\/strong>of Member States<strong> (6 countries)<\/strong> are reporting a test positivity rate higher than 12% this week:<\/li><li>Botswana<\/li><li>Eswatini<\/li><li>DR Congo<\/li><li>Sao Tome and Principe<\/li><li>South Africa<\/li><li>Zimbabwe<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CAPACITY-BUILDING FOR MEMBER STATES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>5th session of the IPC webinar 10th series held this week Wednesday on <strong>\u201cThe Use of Data for Surveillance and IPC Improvement during Outbreaks\u201d<\/strong> More than <strong>500 participants<\/strong> were trained on the English session with Arabic and Portuguese interpretation. The French session will take place today.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ANNOUNCEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li><strong>The PAVM meeting convened on the 06<sup>th<\/sup> &amp; 07<sup>th<\/sup> December 2021 by t<\/strong><strong>he Africa CDC<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong>AUDA NEPAD, and CFTA<\/strong><strong> to discuss the Progress made so far on implementing the Partnerships for Vaccine Manufacturing in Africa was a successful. A communique is issued and will be disseminated with the outcomes.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Next week, Africa is organizing the First CPHIA and a High level Ministerial Meeting of Ministers of Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>From the 14<sup>th<\/sup> to the 16<sup>th<\/sup> December 2021, t<\/strong><strong>he Africa CDC and the African Union will be hosting <\/strong><strong>the inaugural Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA 2021) virtually.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>CPHIA 2021 comes at a critical time on the continent and in the world. COVID-19 has strained health systems globally, and with limited access to vaccines in Africa, the pandemic has laid bare deep inequities in access to healthcare and scientific innovations. CPHIA will create a unique platform where African researchers, policymakers and stakeholders can share perspectives and research findings in public health, while ushering in a new era of strengthened scientific collaboration and innovation across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of heads of state and leading scientific experts are already confirmed for the event, which will focus on lessons learned from COVID-19 and how the continent charts a new path forward for public health. Media registration is now open at <a href=\"https:\/\/eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cphia2021.com%2F&amp;data=04%7C01%7CGwehN%40africa-union.org%7Cccc985753580426ba0db08d9afe5b7d6%7C4f56f714477c44a1a135a2fb27680aaf%7C0%7C0%7C637734223440180698%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&amp;sdata=sEfiIVUqMdfLAyr%2FA5UkbnnZuVNwFYfLrVggvxgUPDk%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">www.cphia2021.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Africa CDC will convene the <strong>High level meeting for Ministries of Health to discuss the adapted strategy to enhance prevention, monitoring and treatment of COVID-19 on 20 December 2021.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In accordance to Africa CDC\u2019s mandate, and following the Adapted Africa Joint Continental Strategy for COVID-19 Pandemic, the Africa CDC is currently supporting AU Member States in their response against the COVID-19 pandemic through strengthening surveillance; emergency preparedness and response; laboratory systems and networks; public health workforce and also through establishment and strengthening of National Public Health Institutes.<strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE<\/strong><gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>With regards to the current progress of vaccinations across the continent &#8211; as of 9th December, African Union Member States are reporting the following:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses supplied:<\/u><\/strong><strong> 431.9 million COVID-19 vaccine doses<\/strong> have been procured by 54 Member States.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses administered:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>245.2 million COVID-19 vaccine doses <\/strong>have been administered, which corresponds to <strong>56.77%<\/strong> of the total supply available in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Coverage: <\/u><\/strong><strong>7.35<\/strong><strong>% of the population <\/strong>has been fully vaccinated on the continent.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The<strong> following five countries<\/strong> have administered the most vaccine doses in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><em>Country<\/em><\/td><td><strong><em>Doses administered<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td><strong><em>% of the supply<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td><em>% of Population <strong>fully vaccinated<\/strong><\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>Morocco<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>47.2 million<\/td><td>69.54%<\/td><td>61.65%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>Egypt<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>39.8 million<\/td><td>51.71%<\/td><td>14.39%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>South Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>26.6 million<\/td><td>84.28%<\/td><td>26.6%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>Ethiopia<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>11.7 million<\/td><td>70.44%<\/td><td>11.7%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>Algeria<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>11.3 million<\/td><td>51.02%<\/td><td>11.3%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>More details are provided on our dashboard (<a href=\"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/covid-19-vaccination\/\">https:\/\/africacdc.org\/covid-19-vaccination\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Eritrea<\/strong> is the remaining AU Member States yet to start COVID-19 vaccine roll out. <strong><\/strong><\/li><li><strong>AVAT J&amp;J DELIVERIES<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From 2 &#8211; 8 December, 2.6 million doses of J&amp;J doses were distributed to 5 AU Member states.<\/strong> Lesotho, Madagascar, Botswana, Mozambique, Ghana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The total number of AVAT deliveries(J&amp;J) to 33 AU member states totals about 21.7 M doses. <\/strong>These are Angola, Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Congo Republic, C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, DRC, Burkina Faso, Sao Tome and Principe, Burundi. Also, 12, 000 doses were delivered to the African Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>732,000<\/strong> <strong>doses <\/strong>of the same were delivered to 6 Caribbean countries; Trinidad and Tobago, Bahamas, Guyana, Jamaica, Belize, Antigua &amp;Barbuda.
