This accounts for <strong>3.3%<\/strong> of total cases reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total recoveries:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 8.8 million <\/strong>people have recovered (8,813,594). This accounts for <strong>89%<\/strong> of the total cases reported in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total deaths:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 229,000 deaths <\/strong>have been reported (229,751). This results ina cumulative <strong>case fatality rate<\/strong> (CFR) of 2.3%,and accounts for <strong>4.2%<\/strong> of deaths reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following five countries account for <strong><u>62%<\/u><\/strong> of all cases reported in Africa.<ul><li>South Africa: <strong>35%<\/strong> of total cases (3,475,512)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Morocco: <strong>10%<\/strong> of total cases (971,961)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Tunisia: <strong>7%<\/strong> of total cases (728,802)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ethiopia: <strong>4%<\/strong> of total cases (428,796)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Libya: <strong>4%<\/strong> of total cases (390,938<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong><u>Case Fatality Rate (CFR):<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>this week, <strong>26 <\/strong>countries (<strong>47%<\/strong> of Member States), are reporting a CFR higher than the global average of 2%.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>3 <\/strong>countries<strong> (Egypt, Somalia <\/strong>and<strong> Sudan) <\/strong>are reporting a<strong> CFR higher than 5%.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>95% <\/strong>of Member States(<strong>52 <\/strong>countries) experienced the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> COVID-19 wave. <strong>38 (69%) MS are experiencing a more severe 3<sup>rd<\/sup> wave.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Since the last briefing,<strong> ONE <\/strong>additional country<strong> (Chad)<\/strong> Member States is experiencing a 3<sup>rd<\/sup> wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>FORTY-TWO <\/strong>countries are experiencing a 4<sup>th<\/sup> COVID-19 wave (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire, Congo Republic, DR Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Saharawi Republic, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe). <strong><u>24 (44%) MS are experiencing a more severe 4<sup>th<\/sup> wave<\/u>.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Since the last briefing, <strong>NINE <\/strong>additional Member States <strong>(Congo Brazzaville, Gabon, Guinea, Liberia, Morocco, Niger, Sao Tome <\/strong>and<strong> Principe, Senegal, and Sierra Leone)<\/strong> are experiencing a 4<sup>th<\/sup> wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>FIVE <\/strong>countries <strong>(Algeria, Congo Brazzaville, Kenya, Mauritius <\/strong>and<strong> Somalia) <\/strong>are experiencing a 5<sup>th<\/sup> COVID-19 wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Since the last briefing, <strong>ONE <\/strong>additional Member State <strong>(Congo Brazzaville)<\/strong> is experiencing a 5<sup>th<\/sup> wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> VARIANTS OF CONCERN (VOCs)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>48<\/strong> countries are now reporting the <strong>Alpha<\/strong> (<strong>B.1.1.7<\/strong>) VOC.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the last briefing, <strong>NO <\/strong>additional Member States have reported this variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>44<\/strong> countries are now reporting the <strong>Beta<\/strong> (<strong>B.1.351<\/strong>) VOC.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Since the last briefing, <strong>NO <\/strong>additional Member States have reported this variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>46 <\/strong>countries are now reporting the <strong>Delta<\/strong> (<strong>B.1.617.2<\/strong>) VOC.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the last briefing, <strong>NO<\/strong> additional Member States have reported this variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>6<\/strong> Member States are reporting the <strong>Gamma (GR\/501Y.V3\/P.1+P.1.1+P.1.2)<\/strong> VOC. This is a 5%<strong> increase <\/strong>from the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>highest proportion <\/strong>of new cases is from the <strong>Southern region<\/strong> (<strong>49%<\/strong>). The other regions are as follows:<\/li><li>Eastern region (25%)<\/li><li>Western region (11%)<\/li><li>Northern region (10%)<\/li><li>Central region (5%)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following 5 countries are reporting the <strong><u>highest number<\/u><\/strong> of new cases:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>South Africa (58,896)<\/strong><\/li><li>Ethiopia (27,960)<\/li><li>Zambia (24,828)<\/li><li>Mozambique (20,220)<\/li><li>Kenya (17,178)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following 5 countries are reporting the <strong>highest daily incidence per million<\/strong> <strong>population<\/strong>, (<em>average number of new cases per million population per day<\/em>):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cabo Verde (807)<\/li><li>Seychelles (770)<\/li><li>Botswana (418)<\/li><li>Eswatini (219)<\/li><li>Namibia (193)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New deaths:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>A total of <strong>1,496 new deaths<\/strong> were reported in Africa compared to <strong>1,457 <\/strong>from the previous week. This represents a <strong>3% increase <\/strong>in new deaths from the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> FOUR-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following are trends over the past 4 epidemiological weeks, (<strong>6 December 2021 &#8211; 2 January 2022<\/strong>):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New cases<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>36% average increase <\/strong>in new cases reported in Africa over the last 4 weeks.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a <strong>regional<\/strong> breakdown:<ul><li><strong>130% increase <\/strong>in the<strong> Eastern <\/strong>region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>104% <strong>increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Western<\/strong> region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>59%<strong> increase <\/strong>in the <strong>Central <\/strong>region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>30%<strong> increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Southern<\/strong> region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>24%<strong> increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Northern<\/strong> region<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a breakdown by the <strong>most populous countries<\/strong> in Africa:<ul><li><strong>Kenya: 238% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Ethiopia: 217% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Nigeria: 155% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>DR Congo: 102% average Increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>South Africa: 7% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Egypt: 2% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New deaths<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>8% average increase <\/strong>in new deaths reported in Africa each week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a breakdown by the <strong>most populous countries<\/strong> in Africa:<ul><li><strong>Nigeria: 249% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Kenya: 215% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>South Africa: 34% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Ethiopia: 12% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Egypt<\/strong>: 16% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>DR Congo: No change<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 TESTING &amp; MEDICAL SUPPLIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To date, <strong>over 89.9 million<\/strong> COVID-19 tests (89,916,084) have been conducted in African Union Member States since the pandemic started.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Over <strong>1.3 million new tests<\/strong> (1,351,798) were reported for epidemiological <strong>week 52 <\/strong>(22 December 2021 &#8211; 2 January 2022).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This is a 13%<strong> decrease <\/strong>from the previous week when 1,539,538 tests were reported.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The cumulative positivity rate is <strong>11%<\/strong> and the test-per-case ratio is<strong> 9.1, <\/strong>similar to a positivity rate of 10.7% and test-per-case ratio of 9.3 in the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>45% <\/strong>of Member States<strong> (25 countries) <\/strong>are reporting a test positivity rate higher than 12% this week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>With regards to the current progress of vaccinations across the continent &#8211; as of 5th December, African Union Member States are reporting the following:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses supplied:<\/u><\/strong><strong> 547 million COVID-19 vaccine doses<\/strong> have been procured by 54 Member States.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses administered:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>326 million COVID-19 vaccine doses <\/strong>have been administered, which corresponds to <strong>59.7%<\/strong> of the total supply available in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Coverage:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>9.6% of the population <\/strong>has been fully vaccinated on the continent.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The<strong> following five countries<\/strong> have administered the most vaccine doses in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><em>Country<\/em><\/td><td><strong><em>Doses administered<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td><strong><em>% of the supply<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td><em>% of Population <strong>fully vaccinated<\/strong><\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>Morocco<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>50.6 million<\/td><td>85.5%<\/td><td>62.2%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>Egypt<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>48.7 million<\/td><td>69.3%<\/td><td>17.8%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>South Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>28.2 million<\/td><td>89.3%<\/td><td>26.9%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>Nigeria<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>15.6 million<\/td><td>38.3%<\/td><td>2.2%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>Mozambique<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>15.5 million<\/td><td>76.3%<\/td><td>22.1%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>More details are provided on our dashboard (<a href=\"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/covid-19-vaccination\/\">https:\/\/africacdc.org\/covid-19-vaccination\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Eritrea<\/strong> is the remaining AU Member States yet to start COVID-19 vaccine roll out. <strong><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AVAT J&amp;J DELIVERIES<\/strong><strong>The total number of AVAT deliveries(J&amp;J) to 34 AU member states totals about 32.5 M doses. <\/strong>These are Angola, Benin, Burundi, Botswana, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, DRC, Burkina Faso, Sao Tome and Principe, and Burundi.
