{"id":10814,"date":"2022-01-13T10:05:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-13T07:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/?post_type=speech&#038;p=10814"},"modified":"2022-01-20T14:05:38","modified_gmt":"2022-01-20T11:05:38","slug":"talking-points-weekly-press-briefing-on-covid-19-in-africa-13-january-2022","status":"publish","type":"speech","link":"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/speech\/talking-points-weekly-press-briefing-on-covid-19-in-africa-13-january-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Talking Points, Weekly Press Briefing on COVID-19 in Africa, 13 January 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Welcome Remarks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Good morning from the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, and thank you to members of the press for joining today\u2019s briefing.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>At this time, I will share updates on the COVID-19 situation on the continent, including our response efforts and updates on the vaccine situation.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update | OVERVIEW<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>As of today, January 13th, African Union Member States are reporting the following:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total cases:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 10.1 million <\/strong>COVID-19 cases have been reported in Africa, (10,173,541). This accounts for <strong>3.3%<\/strong> of total cases reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total recoveries:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 9 million <\/strong>people have recovered (9,061,284). This accounts for <strong>89%<\/strong> of the total cases reported in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total deaths:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 223,000 deaths <\/strong>have been reported (232,562). This results ina cumulative <strong>case fatality rate<\/strong> (CFR) of 2.3%,and accounts for <strong>4.2%<\/strong> of deaths reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following five countries account for <strong><u>62%<\/u><\/strong> of all cases reported in Africa.<ul><li>South Africa: <strong>35%<\/strong> of total cases (3,540,891)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Morocco: <strong>10%<\/strong> of total cases (1,017,560)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Tunisia: <strong>7%<\/strong> of total cases (749,832)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ethiopia: <strong>4%<\/strong> of total cases (448,728)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Libya: <strong>4%<\/strong> of total cases (395,069)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Case Fatality Rate (CFR):<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>this week, <strong>26 <\/strong>countries (<strong>47%<\/strong> of Member States), are reporting a CFR higher than the global average of 1.8%.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>3 <\/strong>countries<strong> (Egypt, Somalia <\/strong>and<strong> Sudan) <\/strong>are reporting a<strong> CFR higher than 5%.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>96% <\/strong>of Member States(<strong>53 <\/strong>countries) experienced the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> COVID-19 wave. <strong>37 (70%) MS are experiencing a more severe 3<sup>rd<\/sup> wave.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Since the last briefing,<strong> ONE <\/strong>additional country<strong> (Seychelles)<\/strong> Member States is experiencing a 3<sup>rd<\/sup> wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Forty-six <\/strong>countries (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi,&nbsp; Cabo Verde, C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire, Cameroon, Congo Republic, DR Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Saharawi Republic, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe)are experiencing a 4<sup>th<\/sup> COVID-19 wave. <strong>28 (61%) MS are experiencing a more severe 4<sup>th<\/sup> wave.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Since the last briefing, <strong>FOUR <\/strong>additional Member States <strong>(Cameroon, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea and Gambia)<\/strong> are experiencing a 4<sup>th<\/sup> wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Eight <\/strong>countries <strong>(Algeria, Benin, Congo Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mauritius, Somalia and Tunisia) <\/strong>are experiencing a 5<sup>th<\/sup> COVID-19 wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Since the last briefing, <strong>THREE <\/strong>additional Member States <strong>(Benin, Guinea-Bissau and Tunisia)<\/strong> are experiencing a 5<sup>th<\/sup> wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> VARIANTS OF CONCERN (VOC)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>48<\/strong> countries are now reporting the <strong>Alpha<\/strong> (<strong>B.1.1.7<\/strong>) VOC.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the last briefing, <strong>NO <\/strong>additional Member States have reported this variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>44<\/strong> countries are now reporting the <strong>Beta<\/strong> (<strong>B.1.351<\/strong>) VOC.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 9 January 2022<\/strong>), compared to the previous epidemiological week 52 (27 December 2021 &#8211; 2 January 2022):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New cases:<\/u><\/strong> A total of<strong> 307,062 new cases<\/strong> were reported in Africa. This is a 2%<strong> increase <\/strong>from the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>highest proportion <\/strong>of new cases is from the <strong>Southern region<\/strong> (<strong>43%<\/strong>). The other regions are as follows:<\/li><li>Northern region (23%)<\/li><li>Eastern region (18%)<\/li><li>Western region (12%)<\/li><li>Central region (4%)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following 5 countries are reporting the <strong><u>highest number<\/u><\/strong> of new cases:<\/li><li><strong>South Africa (53,618)<\/strong><\/li><li>Morocco (35,307)<\/li><li>Zambia (24,956)<\/li><li>Mozambique (18,677)<\/li><li>Ethiopia (17,468)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following 5 countries are reporting the <strong>highest daily incidence per million<\/strong> <strong>population<\/strong>, (<em>average number of new cases per million population per day<\/em>):<\/li><li>Seychelles (3114)<\/li><li>Cabo Verde (1854)<\/li><li>Sao Tome and Principe (700)<\/li><li>Botswana (618)<\/li><li>Mauritania (212)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New deaths:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>A total of <strong>2,680 new deaths<\/strong> were reported in Africa compared to <strong>1,451 <\/strong>from the previous week. This represents an <strong>85% increase <\/strong>in new deaths from the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> FOUR-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following are trends over the past 4 epidemiological weeks, (<strong>13 December 2021 &#8211; 9 January 2022<\/strong>):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New cases<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>11% average increase <\/strong>in new cases reported in Africa over the last 4 weeks.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a <strong>regional<\/strong> breakdown:<ul><li><strong>125% increase <\/strong>in the<strong> Eastern <\/strong>region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>74% <strong>increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Western<\/strong> region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>59%<strong> increase <\/strong>in the <strong>Northern <\/strong>region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>28%<strong> increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Central<\/strong> region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>6%<strong> decrease<\/strong> in the <strong>Southern<\/strong> region<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a breakdown by the <strong>most populous countries<\/strong> in Africa:<ul><li><strong>Kenya: 210% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Ethiopia: 209% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Nigeria: 41% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>South Africa: 19% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>DR Congo: 3% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Egypt: 1% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New deaths<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>33% average increase <\/strong>in new deaths reported in Africa each week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a breakdown by the <strong>most populous countries<\/strong> in Africa:<ul><li><strong>Nigeria: 299% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Kenya: 98% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>South Africa: 82% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Ethiopia: 30% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Egypt<\/strong>: 16% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>DR Congo: No change<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 TESTING &amp; MEDICAL SUPPLIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To date, <strong>over 91.1 million<\/strong> COVID-19 tests (91,331,072) have been conducted in African Union Member States since the pandemic started.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Over <strong>1.5 million new tests<\/strong> (1,594,953) were reported for epidemiological <strong>week 1 <\/strong>(3 &#8211; 9 January 2022).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This is a 15%<strong> increase <\/strong>from the previous week when 1,363,403 tests were reported.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The cumulative positivity rate is <strong>11.1%<\/strong> and the test-per-case ratio is<strong> 9.0<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For epidemiological week 1 (3-9 January 2022), the positivity rate is 19.3% and the test-per-case ratio is 5.2, which is a decrease (22%) in the positivity rate and an increase (4.5) in the test-per-case ratio compared to the previous week, respectively.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>55% <\/strong>of Member States<strong> (30 countries) <\/strong>are reporting a test positivity rate higher than 12% this week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>With regards to the current progress of vaccinations across the continent &#8211; as of 12<sup>th<\/sup> January, African Union Member States are reporting the following:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses supplied:<\/u><\/strong><strong> 563 million COVID-19 vaccine doses<\/strong> have been procured by 54 Member States.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses administered:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>340 million COVID-19 vaccine doses <\/strong>have been administered, which corresponds to 60.4<strong>%<\/strong> of the total supply available in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Coverage:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>10.1% of the population <\/strong>has been fully vaccinated on the continent.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The<strong> following five countries<\/strong> have administered the most vaccine doses in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><em>Country<\/em><\/td><td><strong><em>Doses administered<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td><strong><em>% of the supply<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td><em>% of Population <strong>fully vaccinated<\/strong><\/em><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>Egypt<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>58.3 million<\/td><td>82.9%<\/td><td>22.3%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>Morocco<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>51.2 million<\/td><td>86.5%<\/td><td>62.3%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>South Africa<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>28.7 million<\/td><td>90.9%<\/td><td>27.3%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>Nigeria<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>16.9 million<\/td><td>39.1%<\/td><td>2.4%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><em>Mozambique<\/em><\/strong><\/td><td>16.8 million<\/td><td>78.3%<\/td><td>23.8%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>More details are provided on our dashboard (<a href=\"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/covid-19-vaccination\/\">https:\/\/africacdc.org\/covid-19-vaccination\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Eritrea<\/strong> is the remaining AU Member States yet to start COVID-19 vaccine roll out. <strong><\/strong><\/li><li><strong>AVAT DELIVERIES<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To date 35.8 Million J &amp;
