This accounts for <strong>3%<\/strong> of total cases reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total recoveries:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 11.3 million <\/strong>people have recovered (11,378,344). This accounts for <strong>95%<\/strong> of the total cases reported in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total deaths:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 255 thousand deaths <\/strong>have been reported (255,137). This results ina cumulative <strong>case fatality rate<\/strong> (CFR) of 2.2%,and accounts for <strong>4.1%<\/strong> of deaths reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following five countries account for <strong><u>61%<\/u><\/strong> of all cases reported in Africa.<ul><li>South Africa: <strong>33%<\/strong> of total cases (4,004,555)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Morocco: <strong>11%<\/strong> of total cases (1,261,499)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Tunisia: <strong>9%<\/strong> of total cases (1,134,660)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Egypt: <strong>4%<\/strong> of total cases (515,667)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Libya: <strong>4<\/strong>% of total cases (505,350)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Case Fatality Rate (CFR):<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>this week, <strong>41 <\/strong>countries (<strong>75%<\/strong> of Member States), are reporting a CFR higher than the global average of 1.1%.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>2 <\/strong>countries<strong> (Somalia <\/strong>and<strong> Sudan) <\/strong>are reporting a<strong> CFR higher than 5%.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Twenty-six <\/strong>countries <strong>(Algeria, Benin, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Congo Republic, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Tunisia, Zambia <\/strong>and<strong> Zimbabwe) <\/strong>experienced a 5<sup>th<\/sup> COVID-19 wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>7 (32%) MS (Algeria, Congo Republic, Egypt, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Tunisia and Zambia) <\/strong>experienced a more severe 5<sup>th<\/sup> wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Since the last briefing, <strong>ONE <\/strong>additional Member State (<strong>Senegal)<\/strong> is experiencing a 5<sup>th<\/sup> wave.<\/li><li><strong>FIVE <\/strong>Member States <strong>(Algeria, Burundi, Kenya, Mauritius and Tunisia) <\/strong>experienced a 6<sup>th<\/sup> COVID-19 wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Since the last briefing, <strong>TWO <\/strong>additional Member States <strong>(Algeria <\/strong>and<strong> Burundi<\/strong><strong>) <\/strong>are experiencing a 6<sup>th<\/sup> wave.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> VARIANTS OF CONCERN (VOC)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>No change on MS reporting:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u25cf The Alpha (B.1.1.7) <\/strong>VOC (50MS)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The Beta<\/strong> (<strong>B.1.351<\/strong>) VOC (45 MS)<\/li><li><strong>The Delta<\/strong> (<strong>B.1.617.2<\/strong>) VOC (52 MS)<\/li><li><strong>The Gamma (GR\/501Y.V3\/P.1+P.1.1+P.1.2)<\/strong> VOC<a href=\"#_ftn1\" id=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> (3MS)<\/li><li><strong>The Omicron GR\/484A (B.1.1.529) <\/strong>VOC (50 MS)<\/li><li><strong>The Omicron BA.2 sub-lineage<\/strong> (26 MS)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More details are provided in our dashboard: <a href=\"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/institutes\/ipg\/\">https:\/\/africacdc.org\/institutes\/ipg\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> ONE-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following are trends for epidemiological week <strong>30 <\/strong>(<strong>4 &#8211; 31 July 2022<\/strong>), compared to the previous epidemiological week 29 (18 &#8211; 24 July 2022):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New cases:<\/u><\/strong> A total of<strong> 20,455 new cases<\/strong> were reported in Africa. This is a <strong>42% decrease <\/strong>from the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>highest proportion <\/strong>of new cases is from the <strong>Northern region<\/strong> (<strong>54%<\/strong>). 31 July 2022<\/strong>):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New cases<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>14% average decrease<\/strong> in new cases reported in Africa over the last 4 weeks.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a <strong>regional<\/strong> breakdown:<ul><li>17% <strong>increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Central<\/strong> region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>15%decreasein the Southernregion<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>14%decrease in theEasternregion<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>8%decrease in the Northern region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>7% decreasein theWestern <strong>r<\/strong>egion<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a breakdown by the <strong>most populous countries<\/strong> in Africa:<ul><li>Nigeria: <strong>4% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Kenya: 37% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ethiopia: 29% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>DR Congo: 20% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>South Africa: 2% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Egypt: No change<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New deaths<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>6% average decrease <\/strong>in new deaths reported in Africa each week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a <strong>regional<\/strong> breakdown:<ul><li>37%<strong> increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Western<\/strong> region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>16% <strong>increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Eastern<\/strong> region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>101% <strong>increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Northern<\/strong> region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>13%decrease in the Southern region<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>No change in the Central region<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a breakdown by the <strong>most populous countries<\/strong> in Africa:<ul><li>Kenya: <strong>6% average increase<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Ethiopia: 31% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>DR Congo: 13% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>South Africa: 10% average decrease<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Egypt<strong>: <\/strong>No change<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Nigeria: No change<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 TESTING &amp; MEDICAL SUPPLIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To date, <strong>over 119.7 million<\/strong> COVID-19 tests (119,766,406) have been conducted in African Union Member States since the pandemic started.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Over <strong>399 thousand new tests<\/strong> (399,050) were reported for epidemiological <strong>week 30 <\/strong>(25 &#8211; 31 July 2022).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This is an 8%<strong> increase <\/strong>from the previous week when 371,179 tests were reported.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For epidemiological week 30 (25 &#8211; 31 July 2022), the positivity rate is 10% and the test-per-case ratio is 20.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>2% <\/strong>ofMember States <strong>(1 country: Tunisia)<\/strong> is reporting a test positivity rate higher than 12% this week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>With regards to the current progress of vaccinations across the continent &#8211; as 3 August 2022, African Union Member States are reporting the following:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses supplied:<\/u><\/strong><strong> 920 million COVID-19 vaccine doses<\/strong> have been procured by 54 Member States.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses administered:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>637 million COVID-19 vaccine doses <\/strong>have been administered, which corresponds to 69<strong>%<\/strong> of the total supply available in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Coverage:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>20.3% of the total population (2022) <\/strong>has been fully vaccinated on the continent.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf The<strong> following 10 AU member States<\/strong> have vaccinated more than 40% of their total population:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Countries<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>% Fully Vaxxed total pop (2022) (doses)<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>%&nbsp;
