This accounts for <strong>3%<\/strong> of total cases reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total recoveries:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 11.3 million <\/strong>people have recovered (11,396,247). This accounts for <strong>95%<\/strong> of the total cases reported in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total deaths:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 255 thousand deaths <\/strong>have been reported (255,232). This results ina cumulative <strong>case fatality rate<\/strong> (CFR) of 2.2%,and accounts for <strong>4.1%<\/strong> of deaths reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following five countries account for <strong><u>61%<\/u><\/strong> of all cases reported in Africa:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>South Africa: <strong>33%<\/strong> of total cases (4,004,555)<\/li><li>Morocco: <strong>11%<\/strong> of total cases (1,262,887)<\/li><li>Tunisia: <strong>9%<\/strong> of total cases (1,139,241)<\/li><li>Egypt: <strong>4%<\/strong> of total cases (515,667)<\/li><li>Libya: <strong>4<\/strong>% of total cases (505,956)\\<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Case Fatality Rate (CFR):<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>this week, <strong>41 <\/strong>countries (<strong>75%<\/strong> of Member States), are reporting a CFR higher than the global average of 1.1%.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>2 <\/strong>countries<strong> (Somalia <\/strong>and<strong> Sudan) <\/strong>are reporting a<strong> CFR higher than 5%.<\/strong><\/li><li>Since the last briefing, <strong>NO <\/strong>additional Member State&nbsp; is&nbsp; experiencing a 5<sup>th<\/sup> wave.<strong><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Since the last briefing, <strong>NO <\/strong>additional Member State IS experiencing a 6<sup>th<\/sup> wave.<strong><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> VARIANTS OF CONCERN (VOC)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>No change on MS reporting:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u25cf The Alpha (B.1.1.7) <\/strong>VOC (50MS)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The Beta<\/strong> (<strong>B.1.351<\/strong>) VOC (45 MS)<\/li><li><strong>The Delta<\/strong> (<strong>B.1.617.2<\/strong>) VOC (52 MS)<\/li><li><strong>The Gamma (GR\/501Y.V3\/P.1+P.1.1+P.1.2)<\/strong> VOC<a href=\"#_ftn1\" id=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> (3MS)<\/li><li><strong>The Omicron BA.2 sub-lineage<\/strong> (26 MS)<\/li><li><strong>51<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>Member States are now reporting the<strong> Omicron GR\/484A (B.1.1.529). <\/strong>Since the last briefing, <strong>ONE<\/strong> additional Member State <strong>(<\/strong><strong>Somalia<\/strong><strong>)<\/strong> is reporting this variant.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More details are provided in our dashboard: <a href=\"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/institutes\/ipg\/\">https:\/\/africacdc.org\/institutes\/ipg\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> ONE-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following are trends for epidemiological week <strong>31 <\/strong>(<strong>1 &#8211; 7 August 2022<\/strong>), compared to the previous epidemiological week 30 (25 &#8211; 31 July 2022):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New cases:<\/u><\/strong> A total of<strong> 14,044 new cases<\/strong> were reported in Africa. This is a <strong>31% decrease <\/strong>from the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>highest proportion <\/strong>of new cases is from the <strong>Northern region<\/strong> (<strong>57%<\/strong>). This is a <strong>40% decrease <\/strong>from the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> FOUR-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following are trends over the past 4 epidemiological weeks, (<strong>11 July&nbsp; &#8211; 7 August 2022<\/strong>):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New cases<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>28% average decrease<\/strong> in new cases reported in Africa over the last 4 weeks.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a <strong>regional<\/strong> breakdown:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>18% <strong>increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Central<\/strong> region<\/li><li>31%decreasein the Northernregion<\/li><li>28%decrease in theSouthernregion<\/li><li>7%decrease in the Eastern region<\/li><li>4% decreasein theWestern <strong>r<\/strong>egion<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a breakdown by the <strong>most populous countries<\/strong> in Africa:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Nigeria: <strong>4% average increase<\/strong><\/li><li>Kenya: 36% average decrease<\/li><li>Ethiopia: 28% average decrease<\/li><li>South Africa: 19% average decrease<\/li><li>DR Congo: 13% average decrease<\/li><li>Egypt: No change<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New deaths<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall 1<strong>6% average decrease <\/strong>in new deaths reported in Africa each week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a <strong>regional<\/strong> breakdown:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>21%<strong> increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Western<\/strong> region&nbsp;<\/li><li>6% <strong>increase<\/strong> in the <strong>Eastern<\/strong> region&nbsp;<\/li><li>24% decrease in the Southern region&nbsp;<\/li><li>13%decrease in the Central region&nbsp;<\/li><li>9% decrease in the Northern region<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following is a breakdown by the <strong>most populous countries<\/strong> in Africa:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Nigeria: 75% average decrease<\/li><li>Ethiopia: 43% average decrease<\/li><li>South Africa: 30% average decrease<\/li><li>DR Congo: 25% average decrease<\/li><li>Kenya: 19% average decrease<\/li><li>Egypt<strong>: <\/strong>No change<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 TESTING &amp; MEDICAL SUPPLIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To date, <strong>over 120 million<\/strong> COVID-19 tests (120,185,169) have been conducted in African Union Member States since the pandemic started.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Over <strong>550 thousand new tests<\/strong> (550,274) were reported for epidemiological <strong>week 31 <\/strong>(1 &#8211; 7 August 2022).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This is a 37%<strong> increase <\/strong>from the previous week when 402,019 tests were reported.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For epidemiological week 31 (1 &#8211; 7 August 2022), the positivity rate is 3% and the test-per-case ratio is 39, which is a decrease (73%) in the positivity rate and an increase (99%) in the test-per-case ratio compared to the previous week, respectively.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>4% <\/strong>ofMember States <strong>(2 countries: Libya and Tunisia)<\/strong> are reporting a test positivity rate higher than 12% this week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>With regards to the current progress of vaccinations across the continent &#8211; as 10 August 2022, African Union Member States are reporting the following:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses supplied:<\/u><\/strong><strong> 925 million COVID-19 vaccine doses<\/strong> have been procured by 54 Member States.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses administered:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>653 million COVID-19 vaccine doses <\/strong>have been administered, which corresponds to 71<strong>%<\/strong> of the total supply available in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Coverage:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>21.1% of the total population (2022) <\/strong>has been fully vaccinated on the continent.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf The<strong> following 10 AU member States<\/strong> have vaccinated more than 40% of their total population:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Countries<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>% Fully Vaxxed total pop (2022) (doses)<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>%&nbsp; J&nbsp; doses has been delivered thus far to 35 African Member states and the African Union:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><em>48,777,600 through AU\/J&amp;J,<\/em><\/strong><ul><li><strong><em>17,899,200 through SLL, and<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong><em>7,356,700 through USG donations<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last one week, 151,200 doses of J&amp;J have been delivered to Namibia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 35 member states are, Egypt, Rwanda, Angola, Kenya, Ghana, Tunisia, Libya, Zambia, Botswana, Mauritania, Mauritius, Sao Tome and Principe, Nigeria, Mozambique, Guinea, Gabon, Cameroon, Malawi, Ethiopia, Uganda,Togo, S\u00e9n\u00e9gal, Sierra Leone, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, Liberia,Benin, Guinea Bissau, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Congo republic, DRC, Gambia,Lesotho, Madagascar, Namibia, Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More details are provided on our dashboard (<a href=\"https:\/\/africacdc.org\/covid-19-vaccination\/\">https:\/\/africacdc.org\/covid-19-vaccination\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Eritrea<\/strong> is the remaining AU Member States yet to start COVID-19 vaccine roll out.<strong><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Note<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Africa CDC has changed the denominator of the calculation for percentage fully vaccinated to from 2020 population to 2022 population estimates (UNFPA) to give accurate projections from effective population size (Ne) perspectives.
