This accounts for <strong>2%<\/strong> of total cases reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total recoveries:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 11.4 million <\/strong>people have recovered (11,437,432). This accounts for <strong>95%<\/strong> of the total cases reported in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total deaths:<\/u> Over 255 thousand deaths <\/strong>have been reported (255,733). MEDICAL SUPPLIES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To date, <strong>over 122 million<\/strong> COVID-19 tests (122,715,457) have been conducted in African Union Member States since the pandemic started.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Over <strong>137 thousand new tests<\/strong> (137,188) were reported for epidemiological <strong>week 37 <\/strong>(12 &#8211; 18 September 2022).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This is a 1%<strong> decrease <\/strong>from the previous week when 138,984 tests were reported.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For epidemiological week 37 (12 &#8211; 18 September 2022), the positivity rate is 5% and the test-per-case ratio is 18.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>NO <\/strong>Member State is reporting a test positivity rate higher than 12% this week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>With regards to the current progress of vaccinations across the continent &#8211; as 20 September 2022, African Union Member States are reporting the following:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses supplied:<\/u><\/strong><strong> 953 million COVID-19 vaccine doses<\/strong> have been procured by 54 Member States.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses administered:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>685 million COVID-19 vaccine doses <\/strong>have been administered, which corresponds to 72<strong>%<\/strong> of the total supply available in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>NB: Reduction in number due to reduction in number of doses administered in Rwanda<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Coverage:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>22.2% of the total population (2022) <\/strong>has been fully vaccinated (primary series) on the continent.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The resulting effect is that there will be<strong> a slight reduction in Coverage percentages of total population<\/strong> of Member States on the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New Covid-19 oral antiviral treatment launched in Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The new public-private partnership dubbed the &#8216;Covid Treatment Quick Start Consortium&#8217; for the treatment of COVID-19 with oral antiviral&nbsp; tablet PAXLOVID will be implemented in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.<\/strong> This initiative will be executed by Duke University, the Clinton Health Access Initiative and Americares organization that will serve as the consortium\u2019s implementing partners while Open Society Foundations, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, and Pfizer will be providing financial support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project has been kick-started through a donation by Pfizer of 100,000 courses of PAXLOVID\u2122 (nirmatrelvir\/ritonavir), for which the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a strong recommendation for use in high-risk individuals with mild to moderate COVID-19, administered within five days of symptom onset. The regimen is two tabs of nirmatrelvir and one tab of ritonavir together by mouth two times a day for 5 days. The data showed that participants (all of whom were unvaccinated) who were given Paxlovid were 89% less likely to develop severe illness and death compared to trial participants who received a placebo without evident safety concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is not a substitute for vaccines for people who are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and\/or need a booster shot.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UPDATES ON SLL IMPLEMENTATION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Overview:<\/strong><ul><li>Of the 55 African Union Member States \u2013<ul><li><strong>49 Member States<\/strong> are engaged with the Saving Lives and Livelihoods (SLL) Programme.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>34 have completed microplans, with 19 of these approved, as of August 24, 2022.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Since June 2022, Africa CDC, with the support of the Mastercard Foundation and its Implementing Partners, has begun in 6 Member States: Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Namibia, and Lesotho.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Updates on MS in implementation:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Rwanda<\/strong> has begun vaccination and from September 1 to 10 &#8211; over 10,000 people vaccinated.<\/li><li><strong>&nbsp;Comoros<\/strong> is beginning implementation this week and a team has been deployed.<\/li><li><strong>Tanzania<\/strong> is set to begin implementation on September 26,2022.<\/li><li><strong>Namibia<\/strong> consistently continue to provide vaccination following the joint mass campaign between the government and Africa CDC.<\/li><li><strong>Kenya<\/strong> continue to see increasing vaccination uptake.<\/li><li><strong>Africa CDC<\/strong> continue to support <strong>Ethiopia<\/strong> for the next mass campaign that has seen an increase of 3% vaccine coverage 45%.<\/li><li><strong>Lesotho<\/strong> has started vaccination.<\/li><li><strong>Africa CDC<\/strong> has begun supporting for 3 states in Nigeria.<\/li><li>Implementation has begun in the DRC and the launching is set for today September 22, 2022.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>In the coming weeks<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Implementation will begin in South Sudan, Sierra Leone, Togo and Cape Verde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"_ftn1\" href=\"#_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> The new Pango lineage v4.0.6 (2022-04-24) tool being used by GISAID to assign lineage from last week has reclassified the previous sequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Africa CDC Weekly COVID-19 and other Disease Outbreak Briefing | Sept. 22, 2022\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xjM1lLPmT2w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update | OVERVIEW As of today, September 22nd, African Union Member States are reporting the following: Total cases: Over 12 million COVID-19 cases have been reported in Africa, (12,064,071).
