This accounts for <strong>2%<\/strong> of total cases reported globally.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total recoveries:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 11.4 million <\/strong>people have recovered (11,447,252). This accounts for <strong>95%<\/strong> of the total cases reported in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total deaths:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>Over 255 thousand deaths <\/strong>have been reported (255,846). This results ina cumulative <strong>case fatality rate<\/strong> (CFR) of 2.1%,and accounts for <strong>4.1%<\/strong> of deaths reported globally. Higher than global CFR average of 1.1%.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following five countries account for <strong><u>60%<\/u><\/strong> of all cases reported in Africa.<ul><li>South Africa: <strong>33%<\/strong> of total cases (4,021,746)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Morocco: <strong>10%<\/strong> of total cases (1,265,138)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Tunisia: <strong>9%<\/strong> of total cases (1,145,930)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Egypt: <strong>4%<\/strong> of total cases (515,667)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Libya: <strong>4<\/strong>% of total cases (507,010)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> ONE-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following are trends for epidemiological week <strong>40 (3 &#8211; 9 October 2022), <\/strong>compared to the previous epidemiological week 39 (26 September &#8211; 2 October 2022):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New cases:<\/u><\/strong> A total of<strong> 6,279 new cases<\/strong> were reported in Africa. This is a <strong>15% increase <\/strong>from the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The <strong>highest proportion <\/strong>of new cases is from the <strong>Southern region<\/strong> (<strong>42%<\/strong>). The other regions are as follows:<\/li><li>Central region (23%)<\/li><li>Western region (22%)<\/li><li>Eastern region (7%)<\/li><li>Northern region (6%)<\/li><li>The following 5 countries are reporting the <strong><u>highest number<\/u><\/strong> of new cases:<\/li><li><strong>South Africa (2,175)<\/strong><\/li><li>Cameroon (1,072)<\/li><li>Nigeria (434)<\/li><li>Ghana (418)<\/li><li>Zimbabwe (211)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New deaths:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>A total of 21<strong> new deaths<\/strong> were reported in Africa. This is a <strong>60% decrease <\/strong>from the previous week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 Epidemiology Update<\/strong> |<strong> FOUR-WEEK TREND ANALYSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following are trends over the past 4 epidemiological weeks, (<strong>12 September &#8211; 9 October 2022<\/strong>):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New cases<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>10% average increase<\/strong> in new cases reported in Africa over the last 4 weeks. Increases in Eastern, Central and Southern Regions, with decreases in Northern and Western regions.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>New deaths<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong> There has been an overall <strong>2% average increase <\/strong>in new deaths reported in Africa each week. Increases in Northern, Southern and Western, with a decrease in Eastern and no change in Central.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19 VACCINE UPDATE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>With regards to the current progress of vaccinations across the continent &#8211; as 12 October 2022, African Union Member States are reporting the following:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses supplied:<\/u><\/strong><strong> 997 million COVID-19 vaccine doses<\/strong> have been procured by 54 Member States.<\/li><li><strong><u>Total vaccine doses administered:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>717 million COVID-19 vaccine doses <\/strong>have been administered, which corresponds to 72<strong>%<\/strong> of the total supply available in Africa.<\/li><li><strong><u>Coverage:<\/u><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>23.2% of the total population (2022) <\/strong>has been fully vaccinated (primary series) on the continent. <strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; proper use of health data in reporting.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>On <strong>10 October 2022<\/strong>, Africa CDC and the AUC commemorated the <strong>World <\/strong><strong>Mental Health Day<\/strong> under the theme \u201cMake Mental Health a global priority for all\u201d. Tough work environment for emergency response \u2013 strengthening psychosocial support for staff.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>On <strong>12<sup>th<\/sup> October 2022,<\/strong> the Government of Uganda hosted a high-level emergency ministerial meeting on Cross-border emergency preparedness and response to improve Africa\u2019s health security. Entebbe, Uganda. Communique to be released shortly \u2013 key agreements:<ul><li>Set up Africa Ebola Coordination Taskforce (AfECT);&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Develop a Framework for collaboration and coordination on cross-border emergencies; and &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Follow up ministerial meeting to assess progress in late November 2022.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>On <strong>11 \u2013 13 October 2022, <\/strong>Africa CDC hosted a <strong>High-level Meeting on Community Health <\/strong>in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. To advocate for the transformation&nbsp;of community health declarations and high-level decisions into action and call for political and financial commitment in strengthening community health workforce and systems towards achieving Health Equity in Africa.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>******* <\/strong><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SLL updates &#8211; October 13, 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Overview:<\/strong><\/li><li>Of the 49 Member States engaged with the Saving Lives and Livelihoods (SLL) Programme, 11 Member States have begun implementation. These include Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Namibia, Lesotho, Zambia, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Tanzania, and <strong>more recently, Botswana and Malawi.<\/strong><\/li><li>In the following weeks, implementation will begin in <strong>seven additional countries: Congo Brazzaville, Gabon. Burundi, Togo, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Updates on MS in implementation and reporting data:<\/strong><\/li><li>Of the nine Member States in implementation, <strong>Seven Member States are currently reporting data on DHIS2<\/strong>, as the dashboard indicates. These are <strong>Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Lesotho, DRC, Tanzania and Zambia<\/strong>. Between the start of implementation in June and week 40 (last week, the following number of SLL-supported vaccine doses have been administered in the respective countries:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethiopia: ~583K in 18 weeks<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenya: ~552K in 12 weeks<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Namibia: ~22K in 8 weeks<a href=\"#_ftn1\" id=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lesotho: ~49K in 7 weeks<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rwanda: ~31K in 6 weeks*<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DRC: ~8K in 3 weeks<strong><sup>11<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tanzania: ~ 219K in 1 week<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zambia: ~ 1.5K in 1 week<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For the last reporting week (that is, week 40), as shown on the dashboard, data on the number of Vx doses administered has <strong>only been submitted for Kenya, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Tanzania and Zambia<\/strong>.<ul><li><strong>Kenya:<\/strong> In Kenya Vx doses administered in weeks 40 has decreased sharply whereby ~7k doses were administered in week 40 compared to ~123k in week 39. Challenges sited include stock out of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, intensification of drought whereby population prioritizing receival of food and pause in implementation by health workers ahead of upcoming mass campaign.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Ethiopia: <\/strong>The number of vaccine doses administeredin week 40, (~11k), <strong>increased compared to the previous week (~35k). <\/strong>This is explained by vaccine campaign conducted in Kolfe Zone, Addis Ababa. The fourth round of mass campaign in Ethiopia is delayed due to availability of funds from Gavi to support operational costs<strong>.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Lesotho: <\/strong>Encouragingly, Lesotho has administered a total of &gt; 11k Vx doses (number of Vx doses administered both in weeks 39 and 40)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Tanzania: <\/strong>Tanzania started uploading data this week, more than <strong>219K<\/strong> Vx doses have been administered in week 40. Implementation is ongoing in 7 out of 10 regions being supported by the program.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Zambia<\/strong>: In Zambia1.5K Vx doses have been administered in WK40.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Next steps:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Focus remains to begin implementation in <strong>Congo Brazzaville, Gabon. All had a history of being administered cough syrups produced by Maiden pharmaceutical in India. Toxicology assessment of 23 cough syrup samples confirmed the presence of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol as contaminants, which are known to be toxic and potentially fatal.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>MS affected<\/strong><\/td><td>1 MS<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Response<\/strong><\/td><td>The Gambia MoH developed an emergency response plan. Additionally, the MoH, in collaboration with the Medicines Control Agency, recalled all suspected batches of the syrups in the country. Active case finding at the health facilities is ongoing to identify missed cases.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Africa CDC support<\/strong><\/td><td>Africa CDC continues to monitor the event through the Western Regional Coordinating Center (RCC).<\/td><\/tr><\/thead><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ONGOING OUTBREAKS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Outbreak<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong><strong>Ebola Virus Disease in Uganda<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><a id=\"_heading=h.6fzv6iatl0ip\"><\/a><strong>Update<\/strong><\/td><td>Since the last brief 10 new confirmed cases and nine new deaths of EVD have been reported from Mubende&nbsp; district in Uganda This is a 47.3% decrease in the number of new confirmed cases compared to the last briefing. Cumulatively, 54 confirmed cases with 39 deaths (19 confirmed) giving CFR: 35% were reported from five districts. Of the total cases, 20% (10) are health workers, including four deaths.
